A pair of Art Deco, secretaire bookcases by BelWeb of South Africa (1908-1936) in Burmese teak wood. Central Shelving with integral secretaries compartment with glass fronted shelves on either side.
Brothers James and Richard Bell were Scottish immigrants in South Africa, arriving on the shores of Cape Town in 1902.
They both began work for a furniture manufacturer 'D Issacs' soon after their arrival, however following a heavy depression between 1905 and 1908 they were made redundant. in 1908 the brothers began their own furniture company called 'Bell Bros' with a workforce of six.
Herbert Webb joined the company around 1910 and the name was subsequently changed to Bell Webb & Bell and registered the trademark 'BelWeb'
Following the death of Herbert Webb in 1924 was the Retirement of Richard Bell in 1928. James Bell carried on the company before his forced retirement due to ill health in 1936 and the company was subsequently put into liquidation.
The BelWeb furniture company mainly produced reproduction Chippendale and Sheraton furniture, but turned to original Art Deco Designs when Patrick Casey joined the team as a designer in 1928.
