Founded by John Harris Heal 1810, Heal’s London has been at the forefront of quality British furniture design for over 200 years. Beginning as bed frame manufacturers, Heal’s originally lead with ‘Queen Anne’ and ‘Old English’ styles. However Heal’s shot to fame when Sir Ambrose Heal, (great-grandson to John Harris Heal) joined the family business in 1883. He worked in the company as a craftsman, designer and finally Chairman from 1893 to 1953.

When Ambrose joined the company in 1883, new approaches to design were challenging the revivalist styles of the day. Leading with his maxim, ‘if in doubt, innovate’, Ambrose was grounded in Arts and Crafts ideas but later embraced both French Art Deco influences and the Modernism of Germany’s Bauhaus design school. During the 1930s, specifically, Heal’s developed a taste for adapting continental styles to British tastes and soon became an internationally recognised manufacturer of top contemporary design.

After moving to Tottenham Court Road in 1917, which continues to be their flagship store today, Heal’s had become a well established recognised advocate of innovation in design and by the end of the nineteenth century they were one of the best-known furniture suppliers in London.

Quality design and premium craftsmanship are at the heart of every piece of furniture that Heal’s has to offer. From feather-dressing and mattress-making to a wide selection of furniture and furnishings for the whole home. Heal’s distinctive emphasis on good modern design formed a brand which defined the 20th century.
