Call of the Sea by Charles Leonard Hartwell RA (1873-1951). A rich brown/green patinated study in bronze of a young maiden in reverie set on an integral bronze plinth inscribed with lines from the poem The Sands of Dee by Charles Kingsley.
Signed CL HARTWELL to plinth.

Hartwell was sculptor of the bronze Memorial to Field-Marshal Sir Henry Wilson next to Liverpool Street Station in London. As part of the Chantrey Bequest, Tate Britain now holds his A Foul in the Giants' Race (a group of Indian elephants and their riders, 1908) and Dawn (a rather typically dreamy New Sculpture piece in marble, c.1909-1914).
