Alvar Aalto was born in Finland in 1898. One of the founders of the furniture company Artek, Aalto’s architecture is modern and extremely distinctive for its individuality with Aalto’s name being highly regarded in the history of design. Aalto studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology in 1916. The first piece of architecture designed by Aalto was a house built for his parents, designed while he was still a student.

Aalto married architect Aino Marsio in October 1924. They spent their honeymoon in Italy which bought great inspiration to his later work and prompted them to design several projects together such as the Jyväskylä Workers club. Through travelling around Europe frequently, Aalto found his architectural style by educating himself about modernist techniques. This is when Alto established himself as one of the most unique architects of Finland during his time.

He is acknowledged today as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century.

Alvar Aalto died in Helsinki in May 1976.
