Ernest Filliard was born in 1868 in Chambéry. Filliard was trained from his youth with the painter Chamberly Benoît. He quickly gained praise for his skill as a watercolour artist with his depictions of the landscapes of Savoy but mostly it was his still life pictures of flowers that propelled him to win the Guy Prize in 1893 awarded by the Academy of Savoy and the Pillet-Will Prize in 1895.
