Ladies with Sailor


'Ladies with Sailor', an oil on canvas study of two ladies flirting with a young sailor. Se in a gilt frame. Signed E. Herland to lower left. 

Emma Herland was born in Cherbourg and became a pupil of Jules Lefabvre and Benjamin Constant. She first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1879. She came a member of the Société des Artistes Francais from 1886 onwards and won an honourable mention in 1901. 

Her work 'Children Eating Soup in a Charity School' was included in 'Women Painters of the World'

'Women Painters of the World, from the time of Caterina Vigri, 1413–1463, to Rosa Bonheur and the present day, assembled and edited by Walter Shaw Sparrow. Published 1905.
